When Jean-Claude Juncker took office as President of the European Commission in November 2014, he branded it the “last chance Commission” and proclaimed “a new start for Europe” setting out 10 priorities as his political guidelines. Since then he has steered the EU through a deep poly-crisis, including an escalation of the ‘Greek crisis’, the refugee crisis, a backsliding in the rule of law in certain member states, and the fateful referendum result leading to the United Kingdom’s impending withdrawal from the European Union. As President Juncker’s mandate comes to a close, it is time to look back and assess the achievements of his Commission. How has the Union dealt with the fundamental challenges the EU and its members have experienced in the past decade and what strategic lessons can be drawn for the Union’s future and for the new EU leadership?  At this Thought Leadership Forum, Jean-Claude Juncker will take stock of his term at the Commission’s helm and the lessons learned from the past five years, as well as look ahead to the challenges facing the EU in the new (geo-)political and institutional context. Herman Van Rompuy, EPC President, will introduce the President with some opening remarks. Janis A Emmanouilidis, EPC Director of Studies will moderate a brief question and answer session.
