With the kind support of the U.S. Mission to the European Union, this EPC EU-US Security Forum event welcomed Irfan Saeed, Director, Office of Countering Violent Extremism, Bureau of Counterterrorism and Countering Violent Extremism, Department of State of the United States of America, and presented a unique opportunity to explore this issue and answer to some over-arching questions. How do we define violent extremism? What factors contribute to this phenomenon? What instruments and approaches are available to policymakers? What lessons have we have learned? What challenges lie ahead? And how can cooperation between the US and Europe be improved in this policy area?
This EPC EU-US Security Forum underlined the importance of Counter Violent Extremism (CVE) within a wider Counter Terrorism (CT) approach, provided food for thought, from the mechanics of radicalisation to expect changes in CVE and CT policymaking, gave an insight into US CVE policies under the Trump administration, and discussed the future of EU-US cooperation, the online dimension, and counter-narratives;
