The EU is committed to moving towards a low-carbon economy by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, boosting the share of renewable energy and increasing energy savings. These objectives are contained in its 2020 and 2030 climate and energy targets, and the 2050 low-carbon roadmap, which sets a path for cutting emissions by at least 80%. In order to achieve these aims in a smart, cost-efficient way – while at the same time increasing Europe’s competitiveness – the role for new technologies and solutions needs to be investigated.

This EPC Policy Dialogue was organised with the support of BT, which presented its new report on ‘The role of ICT in reducing carbon emissions in the EU’. The Dialogue discussed the role that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can play in lowering emissions and bringing about efficiency gains in sectors such as energy, manufacturing, transport and buildings. The benefits go also beyond climate and can also support the transition to circular economy. Panellists also analysed how the EU policy framework can help ensure the development and deployment of these technologies, and what more the EU can do to maximise the contribution of ICT in order to achieve climate objectives.
