People are living longer than ever before, and although that is first and foremost a positive development, it has also increased the pressure on healthcare systems and pensions in Europe. As people get older, many need more and specialised care, and more expensive treatments for increasingly complex diseases and ailments. Another challenge is the rising demand in end-of-life care, a sensitive object many prefer to turn a blind eye to. At this CHES Policy Dialogue, healthcare professionals and experts came together to discuss ways of providing sensible end-of-life care that combines good economics with the capacity to meet an individual’s desire to end his or her life in a respectful and peaceful manner, and the role the EU could play in encouraging best practices in the member states.
