The European Union and its member states have faced almost a decade of political tumult. If the EU is to move beyond crisis management towards political and economic renewal, a prerequisite is to better understand the foundation of public and ‘elite’ attitudes to the EU, and where these align and diverge. Revealing challenging divides in Europe, this Policy Dialogue presented and analysed the main findings from new Chatham House report, “The Future of Europe. Comparing Public and Elite Attitudes.” The report, based on a major survey held across 10 EU countries[1], showed a lack of consensus among the elite over the future of EU integration and a pronounced divide within the public on issues of identity. This EPC Policy Dialogue was moderated by Yann-Sven Rittelmeyer, Policy Analyst, European Policy Centre, and welcomed a distinguished panel of guests: Thomas Raines, Research Fellow and Manager of the Europe Programme at Chatham House, Danuta Hübner, Chair of the Constitutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief, Bloomberg News, and Janis A.
