Greece faces an "interesting and challenging" six-month EU presidency starting on 1 January, said Theodoros Sotiropoulos, Permanent Representative of Greece to the EU, at this Breakfast Policy Briefing. It will be a "Spartan" presidency with no superfluous spending, reflecting the economic crisis and recent Greek financial problems. Looking beyond the next six months, he insisted: "We can't pretend that we will go forward with the Union as it is now… reality will impose upon us a discussion on the future. It boils down to what kind of Europe do we want?"
