In this policy briefing, Jyrki Katainen, European Commission Vice-President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, argued strongly that this Commission should focus on deepening the EU’s single market and hoped that this Commission will be remembered as the ‘single market Commission’ and said that focusing on creating a single market in areas such as the capital and digital market would be a common project for entrepreneurs in different EU countries. He called for more harmonisation in the energy sector and also spoke of the role of the European Fund for Strategic Investments in crowding in private funding, the circular economy, a new Commission impact assessment proposal and a possible EU ‘golden rule’ whereby some areas of investment would be left out of the calculation of an EU country’s deficit figures for the purposes of the EU’s Stability and Growth Pact.
