Post-Summit Briefing
Post-Summit

Thursday, 30 June 2016

EU leaders met on 28-29 June for a meeting of the European Council. The Summit’s agenda was dominated by the results of the UK referendum, in which a majority of those British citizens who voted, were in favour of leaving the EU. The European Council discussed next steps on how to organize Britain’s exit from the European Union and how to jointly react to the potential negative consequences of an ‘out’ vote. Despite different positions from individual member states, the general consensus was that the EU should be tough in its stance against the UK to prevent further uncertainty and a domino effect.

At this Post-summit Briefing, speakers analysed the outcome of the Summit and considered the challenges ahead and potential next steps in an EU without one of its key players: the UK. EPC Director of Studies Janis A. Emmanouilidis took part in a panel discussion with Andrew Duff, Visiting Fellow, European Policy Centre; former MEP. Fabian Zuleeg, EPC Chief Executive, moderated the debate.
