Reducing Europe’s dependence – An opportunity for a more coherent, ambitious energy and climate policy

EVENT

Since the crisis in Ukraine, energy security has become one of the top priorities of the European Union and the question of how to reduce Europe’s energy dependence is more pressing than ever. Following a request from the European Council, the European Commission proposed an EU Energy Security Strategy, which includes both short and medium to long term measures to ensure a stable and abundant supply of energy to Europe’s citizens and economy. As the objectives of the energy security strategy are in alignment with those in the area of climate change, and even economic competiveness, some see Europe’s energy security predicament as an opportunity for a more coherent and ambitious policy on climate and energy. Due to diverging national interests, Member States have failed to come to such an agreement in the past, but with Russia’s shadow looming in the background and the new targets proposed by the Commission in the 2030 framework on climate and energy policy, the question now is, will this time be different?
