Policy Briefing
Scotland’s commitment to Europe

EVENT
Tuesday, 02 June 2015

In this policy briefing, the Right Honourable Nicola Sturgeon MSP, First Minister of Scotland, addressed her government’s commitment to Scotland’s continued membership of the European Union. She expressed her concerns regarding UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron’s approach to the upcoming in-out EU referendum, and shared her thoughts on the referendum in the light of the vote to remain in the UK in the Scottish independence referendum, followed by the stunning victory of the Scottish National Party (SNP) in last month’s UK General Election. She also explained why she is seeking to have a double-majority clause included in the UK’s referendum legislation, meaning each of the constituent nations of the UK could not be forced to leave the EU, unless they voted for it.
