Policy Dialogue
TTIP and agriculture – Too tough to handle?

EVENT
Thursday, 10 April 2014

Over the last few months, talks have occurred on the Transatlantic Trade and Partnership Agreement which aims to reduce tariffs and eliminate regulatory barriers across a wide range of sectors for the US and the EU. With more rounds of meetings passed, issues surrounding the agricultural sector seem to be particularly problematic, with several potential sources of contention between the partners. There are real concerns that the final deal could potentially undermine environmental and health standards, marking the issue complex and sensitive. Drawing a series of actors from the business sector, the governmental and the non-governmental sector, this policy dialogue explored the opportunities and potential gains for regulatory cooperation in the agricultural sector in the context of TTIP, as well as main the stumbling blocks. The panel also addressed the implications for the Common Agricultural Policy and environmental and food safety standards.
