Policy Dialogue
The 7 June parliamentary elections - A battle for Turkey’s future

EVENT
Wednesday, 27 May 2015

The Turkey elections were a battle for the future of Turkey. The ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) objective was to achieve a fourth consecutive election victory, something that had never been achieved in all the years of the Turkish republic. This would have given the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the mandate to change the Turkish political system from a parliamentary system to a presidential system. This Policy Dialogue examined the situation on the ground during the pre-election period, why Erdoğan and the AKP wanted to make such a change, and what the likely consequences of such a change would have been. It was also noted that all the political opposition parties were against a change of the current political system and so were looking to stop Erdoğan in his tracks.
