As the first nationwide elections under Donald Trump’s presidency are approaching in the US, recent studies confirm that Americans remain as politically polarised as ever, with Republicans and Democrats diametrically opposed on a wide range of issues. At this Policy Briefing, organised in cooperation with the Pew Research Centre, Associate Director for U.S. politics research at the Pew Research Centre, Jocelyn Kiley, offered an overview of the latest public opinion data of the political landscape in the Trump era looking ahead to November’s congressional and state-level elections. She discussed the centre’s latest findings on what Americans deem important for the midterm campaigns/elections, what they think about President Trump, their views on the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and their attitudes towards democratic values, international trade and tariffs, immigration and climate change.
