The debate around the UK’s membership of the EU raises difficult questions about European integration and – just as acutely – questions about the implications for integration within the UK. Voting in the referendum is expected to differ across the constituent countries of the UK, with Scotland, arguably, being among the most pro-European. If there is a vote for “Brexit” in the UK as a whole, but a majority of Scots voters choose to stay in, the prospect of Scotland outside the EU is likely to increase demands for another Scottish referendum on independence.
