At this EPC Elections Monitor, Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Executive of the European Policy Centre, and Geoff Meade, former Europe Editor of the Press Association, discussed the outcome of the UK snap elections of 8 June 2017, and the likely consequences for the Brexit proceedings. Both agreed that Theresa May has been severely weakened by the results, and will struggle to maintain her authority. But even though her gamble to receive a mandate for a hard Brexit has failed, the result does not change that much about the actual Brexit process, at least in principle. However, the Conservatives being in a ruling coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), which is strongly pro-Brexit, could have an impact on the content of the talks, especially when it comes to the issue of Northern Ireland.
