US-EU relations have gone through some rough patches in the last few decades. Diverging geo-political outlooks and accusations of spying and wire-tapping following the Snowden revelations have destabilised the transatlantic relationship. But the recent developments in eastern Ukraine have re-invigorated US-EU relations and reminded both sides of the ties that bind them and of the shared belief in the advancement of democracy and freedom. The current situation in Ukraine has also revealed just how much US-EU cooperation has changed over the last few decades, forming a ‘global partnership’ in many instances of international crises. This global partnership and, to a lesser extent, the priorities in the bilateral transatlantic relationship, such as TTIP, data privacy and climate change, were among the chief topics discussed by US Ambassador to the European Union, Anthony L. Gardner.
