Policy Dialogue
The future of the Western Balkans and the role of Turkey

EVENT
Wednesday, 25 September 2013

Having been absent from the Western Balkans for a long time, over the last decade Turkey has made a steady comeback and is now an increasingly active economic and political actor in the region. While Turkey has been able to take advantage of her peculiar features to be more functional and complementary to EU policies in Western Balkans, however, Ankara needs to ensure that it takes an “inclusive” approach towards engaging with the region and not repeat some of the mistakes it has made in its policies towards the Middle East region, in particular Syria and Egypt, heard participants in this Turkish Insights Policy Dialogue with Bestami Bilgiç, Professor of International Relations at Ipek University in Ankara, Dimitar Bechev, Senior Fellow at the European Council for Foreign Relations, Kerem Oktem, Senior Associate Member at St Antony’s College at Oxford University and Axel Walldén, Advisor for Enlargement at the European Commission.
