Policy Dialogue
The impact of climate change - Is Europe ready?

EVENT
Wednesday, 25 January 2017

At this Policy Dialogue, organised with the support of the European Environment Agency (EEA), Hans Bruyninckx, Executive Director of the EEA, and Jos Delbeke, Director-General for Climate Action at the European Commission, discussed the findings of the EEA 2016 report Climate change, impacts and vulnerability in Europe and how the EU can adequately respond to the climate challenge. This major report, produced every four years, shows how Europe, which has experienced record high levels of temperatures in recent years, is significantly affected by climate change. While Hans Bruyninckx presented the report’s main findings on the effects of global warming on ecosystems, the economy and citizens’ health in Europe and its different regions, Jos Delbeke focused on the EU’s climate change mitigation and adaptation policies, explaining how the Union can decrease its vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, now and in the future. Representatives of major contributors to the report, including the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (European CDC), were also present to provide additional information and comments.
