Towards a resource-efficient Europe: the Commissions’ blueprint for a circular economy

EVENT
Tuesday, 08 July 2014

The European Commission has recently adopted a circular economy package including the Communication "Towards a circular economy: a zero waste programme for Europe", hoping to establish a common and coherent EU framework to promote the circular economy. Making the European economy more susceptive of circular model ideas can lead to significant economic and environmental advantages, such as the reduction in greenhouse emissions, the creation of new jobs, an increase in the competitiveness of European businesses and a boost in economic growth. By moving towards a more circular economy, the Commission wants to step away from the “take-make-consume and dispose” pattern of the current economic system and instead endorse a model in which what was once considered as waste can be turned into a re-usable resource. At this Policy Briefing, William Neale, member of Environment Commissioner Potočnik’s cabinet, provided a comprehensive overview of this package.
