Olivia Sundberg Diez
Policy Analyst
Olivia Sundberg Diez is a Policy Analyst for the European Migration and Diversity Programme. Her work has primarily focused on the human rights implications of EU policy concerning irregular migration, particularly return and readmission practices.

Olivia graduated summa cum laude with an MA in Human Rights and Humanitarian Action at Sciences Po (Paris), specialising in European studies and migration. She also holds a first class BA in Philosophy from University College London. She has previously worked as a Programme Director at the educational charity Debate Mate, at a range of UK think tanks including Reform and the Centre for Social Justice, as a consultant for the European Council on Foreign Relations, and as a communication and public speaking coach across Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Where Are We Five Years After The EU-Turkey Migration Deal?
Olivia Sundberg Diez spoke at a public event on the past, present and future of cooperation on migration between the EU and Turkey. The event marked five years since the inception of the EU-Turkey Statement and takes place as discussions on the future form of cooperation are ongoing. Olivia highlighted the mixed results of the Statement in terms of resettlement, stemming arrivals, and supporting refugees in Turkey, and highlighted challenges that the future partnership will need to overcome to be effective.

EU migration and mobility policies: The life of (im)migrants before and after COVID-19
Olivia Sundberg Diez spoke at an online event held by the Făgăraș Research Institute, in partnership with the Robert Bosch Foundation, which focused on the impact on COVID-19 on migration and asylum policies in Europe. She discussed the impact of the pandemic on access to asylum, reception conditions for asylum seekers, as well as detention and return, noting lessons to be drawn for future policy in these areas.
