Where Are We Five Years After The EU-Turkey Migration Deal?
Olivia Sundberg Diez spoke at a public event on the past, present and future of cooperation on migration between the EU and Turkey. The event marked five years since the inception of the EU-Turkey Statement and takes place as discussions on the future form of cooperation are ongoing. Olivia highlighted the mixed results of the Statement in terms of resettlement, stemming arrivals, and supporting refugees in Turkey, and highlighted challenges that the future partnership will need to overcome to be effective.

Workshop on Migration
Helena Hahn was invited to speak at an online, closed-door workshop on Mediterranean Migration Governance, which featured separate panels focused on regional dynamics in North Africa, the Middle East and Europe. She spoke about the ongoing negotiations on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, and the role of legal migration pathways in EU migration cooperation with third countries. She highlighted current challenges relating to COVID-19, EU resettlement efforts as well as Talent Partnerships, which future partnerships will need to jointly address in order to be meaningful and effective.

Helena Hahn gave a presentation on the status of the negotiations on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum as well as future prospects under the Slovenian Presidency as part of the Youth Project "Let's Rock the EU Migration Policy".

Workshop on the New Pact on Migration and Asylum
Helena Hahn was invited to speak at an online workshop entitled “The Future of the EU’s New Pact on Migration and Asylum: Perspectives from the EU and its member states”, organized by Ponto – Grassroots Think Tank. She led a session on the implications of the Afghanistan crisis for EU migration policy, looking at the EU’s ability to demonstrate global humanitarian leadership, the provision of humanitarian and development aid as well as refugee resettlement efforts.
